Krk, Mosčenička Draga and Vrsar, Hrvatska (Croatia)

The last couple of weeks in Croatia have been a bit of a blur to be honest. After Boris locked down the UK, it’s been really hard to find our mojo again and enjoy this time out here without guilt, knowing that the time for us to leave was drawing close.

But after we visited the lakes in Plitvice we had another few days inland at a really great camper stop Camping Sabljaci where we were the only ones there and the owner gave us a nice strong shot of the local spirit to welcome us. I mean, he must have seen us coming (come on!) but it was a really nice spot with great facilities next to another big old lake. It was absolutely freezing though outside, and if you know me, I don’t do cold very well, so I politely begged Luke to get back into the sunshine asap.

We plodded along to Krk, an island just accessible before Rijeka where the sun was shining and there were thousands of cats! My fave. A few weeks before when we were in Senj, we briefly met a couple out at a bar who live there and said if we were in the area to give them a call. So we did!

Silvana and Dario, if you read this, you were amazing and we’ve definitely got to come see you guys again when the world allows it. We had two nights out with them and they definitely gave us a warm Croatian welcome.

Krk is a gorgeous island with plenty of sunshine, beaches, restaurants and a good atmosphere. The only issue is visiting in November in the middle of a pandemic, there were loads of places closed so we have yet to see the full sights, but we had a great weekend there, got a new cat to love us (we named him Kaptain Krk of course) made some fantastic friends and found The Secret Garden, the perfect summer pub garden. If only it were still summer.

After Krk we drove to Mosčenička Draga to another camper stop that was actually closed but the kindest lady took us in anyway. She told us that there was a great walk up to the old village that required going up 700 steps to get the views. I stupidly thought 700 might have been an overestimate and suggested it to Luke. 700 steps later and I realised that I’m maybe not as fit as I once was, but it was definitely a view from the top with the town underneath and Rijeka in the distance.

We realised in this town that we probably have a week or so left in us until the drive home so we have arrived in Vrsar at a campsite right on the sea front, again with a great old town to explore and a week of relaxing and figuring things out ready for the journey back.

With about 4 days left, I think we can honestly say we have both had such an amazing time, we’ve met some fantastic people and we’ve made the most out of a really bad situation and wouldn’t change it. But we’ve definitely learned a lot and already have the next trip in plans for when the world is a little more normal again.
