Annecy

What can I say, we love this place. I think they call it the Venice of the French alps or something to that effect. I came here before when Luke was travelling solo and we spent a weekend exploring the lake and many cobbled streets of the old town. It’s only this time around we realised the comparison to Venice. The MANY canals that separate the streets and all lead back to the lake are really a gorgeous, crystal green colour and the lake is perfect for swimming in. We waded. We’re idiots.

But anyway, for anyone thinking of their next holiday, all I can say is it is an amazing place, although absolutely heaving with people this time of year. It gets a lot quieter from September and is about 35km from Geneva Airport – I flew there for £40 return last time.

We encountered our first bit of bad weather a few days ago. I’m talking thunder and lightning and rain like I’ve never seen before, clouds rolled in and you couldn’t see the mountains anymore. I actually had to put on jeans, hoodie and a coat, our bodies were definitely not used to the cold but luckily it only lasted a day.

Pictures as always don’t do the views justice, buy at least we’re capturing them and getting to see first hand how nice these hidden gems are.

So now as we trot on toward Mont Blanc and the snowy mountain caps, we are happy to have covered so much ground in France. It’s been 4 weeks already! We’ve learned a couple of things :

  • France is expensive – good job we know how to eat on a budget
  • We should have come prepared for this heat – fans, lightweight clothing, anything!
  • July is probably too busy to travel around the way we are – we do it anyway, but it’s easy to see how covid has released a whole extra world of campers all fighting for a few camping spots. If you do this, do it later on in summer.

Still, worse situations to be in! Viva la France!
